Volunteer/Academic Outreach Opportunities
SPEO provides Grants and outreach to local organizations that encourage and support youth to enter the engineering profession. Throughout the year, SPEO members volunteer for educational camps and workshops to share educational expertise with area youth.
Training/Educational Programs
SPEO offers training throughout the year on a variety of topics of interest to our members. Raymond L. Vargo, Director of the University of Pittsburgh SBDC, often hosts these training events at no cost to SPEO members. Members are encouraged to recommend topics for training for consideration at monthly meetings.

SPEO is a non-profit organization whose members are dedicated to mentoring local minority- and women-owned business enterprise (MBE/WBE) firms in Southwestern Pennsylvania and providing networking and subconsulting opportunities to them. Become a Member
To become a member of SPEO, download and complete the profile/application that applies to your company or organization below and send it in with a check (for Mentor and Protege applicants). No check is necessary for Associate Members that are local agencies or authorities.
- Any engineering firm with a substantial work location in Southwestern Pennsylvania that has been established for at least ten (10) years and has committed to enhance the business viability of minority and woman-owned engineering firms in the area may become a Mentor Firm Member. (Includes established General Contractors with Design-Build capabilities/engineers on staff).
- Any minority-owned or woman-owned engineering firm with a substantial work location in Southwestern Pennsylvania that needs assistance with establishment or business growth may become a Protégé Firm Member.
- Any individual or any firm or company with a substantial work location in Southwestern PA that does not meet either the Mentor Firm or Protégé Firm Membership requirements may become an Associate Member of the Organization.
- (FOR EXAMPLE: Non-Engineering Professional Services Firms such as Architects, Landscape Architects, etc.)
- Any federal, state or local governmental entity may become an Agency Member of the Organization. Governmental entities are able to join SPEO for no cost.
