Sci-Tek Environmental Services Company (Sci-Tek) is a MBE environmental and civil engineering company. Founded in 1996, Sci-Tek has been successful in providing excellent customer service and support to government agencies, industrial clients, and individuals. The services that Sci-Tek offers include:

  • Environmental Compliance Consulting and Permitting Services,
  • Civil and Environmental Engineering Services,
  • Environmental Site Assessment & Remediation Services,
  • Environmental Project Studies and Consulting,
  • Health & Safety Consulting Services, and
  • Technical and Administrative Support Services

For the past five years, Sci-Tek has been providing sanitary sewer flow monitoring services for the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN). Recently Sci-Tek employed the services of Cosmos Technologies (Cosmos) to assist with the servicing of this contract. Cosmos Technologies is a MBE engineering and environmental management and quality assurance company. Their focus is wastewater treatment and environmental engineering process design and development.

Cosmos Technologies is providing quality control assistance for the ALCOSAN project. They are working with Sci-Tek to schedule field inspections, project assignments, and specials tasks; monitor use of and maintain supplies and equipment for ALCOSAN flow monitoring staff; and maintain ALCOSAN’s inventory system. This position currently reports to Jamille Smith, Sci-Tek’s Manager of Water Quality Services. Jamille praises this support because previously there was not an ALCOSAN inventory system. This service ensures that all outgoing equipment meets expectations and specifications while also surveying and documenting the age of existing equipment.

When asked to elaborate on the benefit of partnering with Sci-Tek, Mr. Fred Douglas, President of Cosmos, stated, “Small businesses can maximize their strengths through the process of teaming; our teaming arrangement proves this is possible.” Mr. Charles Toran, President of Sci-Tek concurs. “Our collaboration on this project is an example of how smaller firms can team up to pursue larger opportunities for the mutual benefit of the firms and the client.”

Semi-annual Member Feature--2007:  Working Together is a Win-Win

Take Controls Link, Inc. (CLI)–a minority/woman owned business employing approximately 20 professionals. Since 1990, CLI has served both public and private clients as a turn-key automation solutions provider and electrical power safety/design firm that offers project services involving process control, plant power distribution, commissioning, software, and information technology. Projects, consulting work, and engineering study efforts have yielded innovative, practical, accurate, and timely solutions to many customer business needs. Industries CLI serves include chemical, power, metals, municipal/government, and transportation. Based in Sewickley, PA, the company also has offices near Tampa, Florida, and Cleveland, Ohio.

Then there’s Dick Corporation–a major construction services firm founded in 1922 with 1,400 employees. As one of the nation’s most successful general contractors, construction managers, and design-builders, Dick Corporation’s full-service capabilities have allowed it to serve an ever-widening client base. The company offers a range of services in the commercial and institutional building, industrial, and transportation markets. Headquartered just outside of Pittsburgh in Large, PA, Dick Corporation is supported regionally through offices in Cleveland, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and the Orlando area. The company’s Dick Pacific subsidiary maintains offices in Honolulu and Guam.

Put these two companies together and you get a winning combination. Both CLI and Dick Corporation are members of SPEO (Southwestern Pennsylvania Engineering Outreach.) One of the goals of SPEO is for its larger members to mentor local MBE/WBE firms and provide networking and contract opportunities. This goal has certainly worked well for both CLI and Dick Corporation. Together, these two companies have formed a bond; a professional construction services team, working hand in hand.

“Working with Dick Corporation has been beneficial for CLI,” says company President, Im Sook. “It has enabled us to work on larger projects and provides the company with greater exposure.” Dick Corporation Director of Business Development Scott Wivell says, “Teaming with Controls Link results in additional value to our clients. We utilize their expertise in automation, controls, and commissioning services to enhance the quality of our projects. As our relationship grows, we continue to elevate the level of their participation.”

Working together has been a positive experience for both companies. Each has come to rely on the other for its expertise, quality, and consistency. This not only fulfills the mission of SPEO, but also adds up to successful projects and satisfied clients as well.

Awarded projects in which CLI teamed with Dick Corporation include:

  • two open-ended contracts with the Pennsylvania Department of General Services (DGS) for commissioning services and construction management;
  • an open-ended contract with the Allegheny County Airport Authority for general construction management services;
  • a contract with the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh, which has included the Glen Hazel High Rise project in Pittsburgh; and
  • the most recent win, a contract to provide Construction Management, Inspection and Testing (CEI) services for the Allegheny County New Medical Examiner’s Office, Morgue, and Forensic Laboratories project, which involves renovation of an existing two story building in Pittsburgh.
