Membership Benefits

SPEO is a non-profit organization whose members are dedicated to mentoring local minority- and women-owned business enterprise (MBE/WBE) firms in Southwestern Pennsylvania and providing networking and subconsulting opportunities to them.  SPEO is committed to increasing the opportunities available to its MBE/WBE members and prospective engineering and science students.

SPEO provides assistance with:

  • Marketing
  • Business mentoring
  • Technical mentoring
  • Staff development
  • Youth engineering initiatives
  • Educational outreach
  • Scholarships

SPEO Members include:

  • Mentor Firms – Small to Large Engineering Firms and Consultants
  • Protégé Firms – MBE/WBE companies
  • Associate/Agency Firms – Government agencies and authorities (or other firms not meeting the Mentor or Protege Member requirements)

Advantages of Joining SPEO:

  • Networking Opportunities
From monthly meetings (Third Tuesday of each month) to annual events such as the February Opportunities Forum; Annual Golf Outing, Reception, and Dinner; and Annual Networking Reception in the Fall, you have the chance to create connections that can lead to business opportunities with clients and teaming partners.  There are also opportunities for Mentor or Associate Firms to host a Protégé Networking Breakfast at their office where only Protégé (MBE/WBE) Firms can attend to network with project management staff. During these meetings, Protégé members have the ability to learn about the needs of these potential clients and the opportunity to discuss and demonstrate their experiences and resource capabilities.
  • Training/Educational Programs
SPEO offers training throughout the year on a variety of topics of interest to our members.  Raymond L. Vargo, Director of the University of Pittsburgh SBDC, often hosts these training events at no cost to SPEO members. Members are encouraged to recommend topics for training for consideration at monthly meetings.
  • Leadership Opportunities
Experience leadership opportunities and skill development through volunteer positions on the Board, as a Director, or on a committee.
  • Volunteer / Academic Outreach Opportunities
SPEO provides scholarships and outreach to local organizations that encourage and support youth to enter the engineering profession. Throughout the year, SPEO members volunteer for educational camps, workshops, etc. to share educational expertise with area youth.  Each year, SPEO hosts a booth at the ALCOSAN Open House where SPEO volunteers help children complete activities requiring math and engineering-related concepts.
